Introduction
Assignments
At the end of each lesson are writing tasks that ask you to respond to the designated readings. The assignments will call for you to analyze selected readings, comprehend literary themes and techniques, and make personal observations and interpretations of what you have read.
For each lesson, I provide essay questions and ask you to answer only some of them. As a matter of choice, I offer a few questions that require Internet access. Please read pages R26–R27 near the back of your textbook before writing an essay based on Internet research.
Your writing assignments should be word processed in a standard font (preferably, 12-point Times New Roman) with one-inch margins on all sides. All assignments should be double-spaced, and your paragraphs should be indented with no spaces between them.
So that your instructor can distinguish one part of a writing assignment from another, be sure to clearly label each part of your assignment (e.g., Lesson 1, Outline; Lesson 1, Essay 2; Lesson 1, Essay 5; etc.)
Although you are not required to complete essays for each question, I urge you to look at and think about each question. If possible, spend a little time making an outline of an essay for each question you don’t answer. When you are preparing to take the exams, you’ll be happy that you made this extra effort.
